This year Joey and I looked around trying to find an ornament for our parents since they are now grandparents. However, we couldn't find what we were really looking for so I thought why not make our own. Plus then we could write their grandparent "name" instead of grandpa and grandma.
This cinnamon dough recipe was perfect! It's super easy with only two ingredients and a lot of fun.
First, you add the cinnamon and applesauce to a medium size bowl (if you decided to use craft glue add it in at this time) and blend together until it becomes dough like. This is a job for your hands. No spoon needed. If you have older kids you can have them blend the ingredients. They will love getting their hands in there. If your dough is a little sticky add the extra cinnamon.
Next, roll out the dough onto a piece of wax paper, parchment paper, or in my case (because I didn't have any of those) foil. I rolled my dough 1/4 inch thick. The thicker they are the more sturdier they are. They take longer to dry but they will last longer.
Pick a cookie cutter of your choice and cut away. At first I used hearts but they weren't big enough to stamp Ava's hand so then I just used a glass cup to cut out a circle. When you are done making your ornaments use a straw to cut out a little hole in the ornament in order to hang it on the tree. Then you can lay them on a cooling rack for a few days to dry. Or you can place the cooling rack on top of a cookie sheet and bake them in the oven at 200 degrees F for 2 hours. Be careful when taking them off the cooling rack. They might stick a little bit so just be gentle with them or they will break.
Ava LOVED the texture of the dough and had a great time making this ornament for her grandparents. This ornament is perfect for kids to make especially little babies because it is safe with no toxic ingredients.
There were lots of smiles and cute baby sounds with Christmas music playing. Christmas cheer was definitely in the air! Making Christmas ornaments has become a new family tradition!
