Johnson’s Family Fried Pies: A Story to Tell

Last weekend, we headed to Nana and Pop’s. Ava received some snuggles from Nana and Pop and got to visit with Great Grandpa Johnson and Marilyn.

Nana baked a delicious ham and paired it with her yummy corn casserole (I love her corn casserole), peas, and rolls. It was such a good meal.

​For dessert we made the Johnson family’s homemade fried pies. These are more than just pies. There is a story behind these pies…

When Joey’s grandpa was little he and his family would gather around the table and make these fried pies. Everyone had a job whether it was making the dough, filling pies, or sealing them closed. All hands were on deck. They made a variety of fruit pies including apple, peach, cherry, minced meat and more. Alice and Frank (Great Grandpa Johnson’s parents) would have everyone make the fried pies a couple times a week. They would package each pie up using wax paper and a stapler. Frank would take them to the grocery stores and markets and put them on the shelves to sell for 10 cents a piece. This became part of their family income. Back then 10 cents was worth a lot. I don’t even think you can get a piece of gum these days for 10 cents!

Everyone gathered in the kitchen on Sunday and helped out with the fried pies just like Great Grandpa Johnson’s family did when he was little.

Afterwards, we enjoyed some delicious fried pies and ice cream! It was a wonderful day spent with family carrying on old traditions. ​

​I have realized that one of my favorite things about this time of year are the stories and family traditions that are shared and carried on throughout the holiday season. I think it helps keep the memories of those we have lost alive in our hearts, and brings families closer together. We are truly blessed!
